Council Draft Budget Report 2009-10

The December 2008 meeting of the new Council of the City of Greater Shepparton has agreed to commit $100,000 for the development of the Dookie and the Murchison-Rushworth Rail Trails.
$80,000 was set aside for the Murchison-Rushworth project and $20,000 for the Dookie trail, conditional on further funding from the Victorian Government in the order of $325,000.
This follows months of negotiation between CoGS and VicTrack, which is custodian of all rail links, for a 20 year lease on the 7 kilometre section of the dis-used rail reserve within the Greater Shepparton boundary. The lease agreement has now been signed by all parties.
The balance of the 20 kilometre trail is in Campaspe Shire, where similar lease negotiations are still underway.
A scoping report on the project has been prepared by an independent consultant and is being considered at a combined meeting of CoGS and Campaspe, where a working group is expected to be established to oversee construction of the new rail trail.
The Murchison-Rushworth Rail Trail will offer a unique cycling experience through rare box ironbark forest bordering onto Waranga Basin, along with rich historical features from local agriculture and gold mining centres.
Commencement of works will mark more than ten year's of hard work and lobbying by the Waranga Land Protection Group, which culminated last year in a massive show of public support when more than 100 people attended a public meeting in Rushworth and voted unanimously in favour of the rail trail.
Well done Maxene and friends!!!
